Sustainability in textile crafts

Craftspeople think differently about sustainability compared to designers and textile specialists. Their perceptions are mostly rooted in a long-lasting connection to materials and their locality. However, this relationship remains mostly hidden; sometimes we get glimpses thereof through the final design, but mostly we come to appreciate their ideas around sustainability through tacit gestures.

Metaphor theory

Metaphors are intrinsic to almost every domain of human activity, helping us to make sense of the world around us. Therefore, before being linguistic, metaphors are cognitive constructs. Metaphors can be expressed among others in language, gestures, visual elements and music and in mixed contexts (multimodal metaphors). Metaphors become particularly representative for textile crafts especially through gestures of creation, manipulation and transformation of materials.

Movement/dance

Craftspeople perform an intricate dance of skillful hands and imaginative minds as they transform raw materials into artful outputs. Apparently repetitive and mechanic, these gestures represent at the same time micro-and meta-metaphors, reflective of perceptions, affects and sensory appreciation of the relationship established with materials and the environment.
